ICA-S1: Ecology

Keynote: Juliane Filser (General and Theoretical Ecology, University of Bremen, Bremen, GER)

“Juliane Filser studied biology in Munich and worked at the GSF Institute of Soil Ecology, specializing in soil zoology, Collembola and ecotoxicology, particularly of heavy metals. Between 1995 and 1998 she was managing director of FAM, then Europe’s largest agroecosystem research network, followed by various stays at the National Environmental Research Institute in Silkeborg, Denmark. In 2000 she took over the chair of ecology at the University of Bremen, and since 2008 she is vice director of the UFT Center for Environmental Research and Sustainable Technology. Her group’s research activities cover environmental hazards, with an emphasis on soil ecology, ecological interactions and prospective assessment of potentials and risks of emerging technologies. From 2006 onwards she has led various larger research networks on environmental risks and benign design of nanomaterials. More recently, the role of soil amendments and soil fauna in carbon cycling has increasingly come into focus.”

ICA-S2: Taxonomy

Keynote: Charlene Janion-Scheepers (Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, ZAF)

“Charlene Janion-Scheepers started working on Collembola in 2007 by comparing the development rates of indigenous and invasive Collembola on sub-Antarctic Marion Island. She completed her Ph.D. in 2013 investigating the Collembola richness in the smallest of the Floral Kingdoms of the World, the Cape Floristic Region in South Africa. Working in a multidisciplinary team shaped her current research interests. These include the adaptation and plasticity of organisms’ responses to climate change and how these responses differ between introduced and indigenous species. To answer these questions, she mainly works on Collembola (springtails), using a multidisciplinary approach incorporating physiology, traditional taxonomy, DNA barcoding, and ecology.”

ICA-S3: Challenges and future aspects

Keynote: Pascal Querner (Integrated Pest Management in Museums, Vienna, AUT)

“Pascal Querner is a biologist who has worked for many years in Collembola ecology. For the last 10 years he has been working as a consultor for museums and other cultural institutions like libraries, archives, palaces and monasteries in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Monitoring insect pests is an important part of IPM and collects a lot of data on the abundance and distribution of museum pests. He works in Austria, Germany and Switzerland and gives IPM workshops in many different places. He is also affiliated to two universities in Vienna and supervises students from time to time in IPM and Collembola identification.”
